My name is Mike McCabe, I am the Vice President of Sportsmen of North America and my job as well as helping to host our TV show is to locate and build good working relationships with top quality outfitters in the hunting industry. About three years ago I crossed paths with Darney Kisslinger. After explaining what SNA is all about and how we give a free hunt away every week to one of our members, film their hunts, then air them on our TV show, Darney invited us to come hunt.
The year that I was supposed to hunt with Kisslinger Outfitting was 2008, three day before getting into camp I fell from a stand while hunting in Alberta that was the end of my season for 2008.
I returned in 2009 this time in a wheelchair, Darney had done everything that was needed to accommodate me in camp and at the stands, I was introduced to my guide Brian and again he did whatever it took to get me where I had to be.
On this trip I Bought along two of our SNA pro-staff and my son, I met two of Darney’s repeat clients while in camp, this was the third trip back for these guys, that is always a good indication of a good camp, but not necessarily a guarantee . So I was ready to see for myself how this hunt was going to pan out. The camp was first class as was the food, but I had come for the oversize bears.
The first two days of our hunt was more like a fall hunt, rain, sleet and high winds, not exactly good bear hunting weather, never the less multiple bear encounters by everyone in camp, yes , you go it, except me, that really didn’t bother me as much as it did Darney. I have hunted Bears all over the Canadian provinces as well as the US and know that as long as the sign is their Trust in your guides .The third day we had 4” of snow and I saw eight bears of witch one was a slammer, I put my tag on him on the fourth day, he squared just under 7ft with a 20” head, the bear was not the biggest in camp that week.
The next day my son Luke tagged his first bear that also made the P&Y book, both of our pro-staffers Brian and jimmy took great P&Y bears, and we even had time for my son to film one of Darney’s clients taking his bear on the last evening.
We had six hunters in camp and took six outstanding bears all while using archery equipment all P&Y animals.
The requirements for a camp that is successful year after year: Large hunting area, Very low hunting pressure, Good genetic area, guides that have the knowledge and Good bait is a must.
When May of 2010 came around my business partner Keith and myself headed North with two of our hunt winners from the SNA club and two cameramen, knowing this time what to expect we were all pumped.
On this trip there was nine hunters in camp seven bow hunters and two rifle hunters, nine bears were taken, one of our winners took a nice blonde bear, the remaining bears that were taken with a bow all great P&Y bears.
The husband and wife team Chuck and Sam that were rifle hunting also took two very impressive bears with the pretty lady ones again out doing her husband as this was the couples sixth trip with Kisslinger’s.
This year after the first night of hunting there were 103 sightings of different bears, the hunters in camp were all seasoned bear hunters so there was no double counting, bears are quite easy to tell apart.
I personally saw forty six bears that week and tagged another monster this time not squaring as much but had a huge head after skinning out; I’m waiting for the official drying time to pass as this one looks good for the B&C book. The number of P&Y and B&C animals that have been harvested in this camp over the past 22 years is outstanding. So have a long hard guess where do you think Mike McCabe will be next year.
This camp has to be my pick of all the camps that I’ve had the privilege to hunt during my carrier, the bait sites are clean with just a barrel and the bait and not a lot of garbage. Darney feeds a high protean mix, he uses no bulk filler feeds like oats that the bears will leave come green up, his bears stay on the baits. One first class operation with great guides and of course there is always Ron (Darney’s dad) to keep an eye on the young’erns so it all goes smooth. If you decide to book a hunt with Kisslinger’s you will have a hunt that you will remember for life and unless you are a very unsocial able character you will come away with some friends for life as well.
Good hunting, be safe, all the best. Mike. |
